Baldwin & Guggisberg

Baldwin & Guggisberg

Philip Baldwin (1947) and Monica Guggisberg (1955), have been a collaborative team for over forty years. They share an instinctive appreciation for the subtle blending of art and design, functionality and abstract expression, combined with a love of material – especially glass.

In addition to running their own glass studio since 1982, they have designed for several of the most prestigious glass manufacturers: Rosenthal in Germany, Steuben in the US, and for over twenty-five years with Venini in Venice. Collaboration and teamwork form a fundamental part of their ethos.

Over time their work has developed its own distinctive signature, based in Italian cold -working « battuto » techniques combined with the Swedish overlay process. They have been pioneers in adapting these techniques and in creating a distinct expression of their own. Color, light, texture, pattern, and shape together reveal an undercurrent of meaning and value, adhering to clear lines.

In recent years they have become ever more sculptural in focus, while seeking to imbue their work with a deep connection to archetypal forms and shapes, and striving for the highest level of craftsmanship. They address eternal symbols of human culture and history, primarily through blown glass, but also using steel, and other materials.

They thrive on assemblages of works with thought-provoking themes. Large installations and major exhibitions in public spaces, such as“Under an Equal Sky”, Canterbury Cathedral 2018,“Walking in the Void”, Glasmuseum Ebeltoft, Denmark 2020,“Amphore-Métaphore”, Musée du Verre François Décorchemont, Conches, France 2022, and“Dans le Labyrinthe: Un Voyage Liminal”, Vitromusée Romont, Switzerland 2023, reflect their concern for the shared conditions of our times, highlighting some of the challenges while continuing to express their love for beauty.
